With El Clasico as the showpiece this is a huge weekend for football across Europe, and by weekend I mean Sunday and only Sunday. The major European football leagues Bundesliga, Ligue 1, Serie A and La Liga are streamed live by a selection of channels including Sky Sports, BT Sport, Amazon Prime and La Liga TV.
The Premier League offers up West Ham vs Tottenham, Brentford vs Leicester and Manchester United vs Liverpool. You can read our preview of the Premier League by clicking here. Fun Fact: European Football VPN is one of the most searched terms on Google.
This week’s European Preview is a little different. Normally, we recommend a game from each of the top four leagues. This week though we’re going to recommend five games that you should watch and with the greatest of respect to the Bundesliga, none of their games make the cut. If you need something to watch on Saturday because the 3pm slate in the Premier League is so bad Id recommend Bournemouth vs Huddersfield in the Championship while you wait on Brighton vs Manchester City.
Our European Football VPN articles are brought to you in partnership with EPL Index, and Dave Hendrick – host of the Two Footed Podcast, offering FREE podcasts to football fans.

⚽ Barcelona vs Real Madrid
🇪🇸 La Liga
📅 Sunday 24 October 2021
⏰ 1515 UK Kick-Off
🖥️ La Liga TV
El Clasico. The biggest game in club football.
Ok, Barcelona are not particularly good right now. And sure, it doesn’t have the same star attractions now that both Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have left La Liga. But this is El Classico. Two titanic clubs, both of whom believe they are the biggest and best in the world, coming together in a match that dominates not just the sporting landscape in Spain, but also the political landscape.
Similar to Marseille vs PSG, this goes beyond football. And in this case, it goes even further beyond. Real Madrid represent an oppressive Spanish government who have refused to recognise Catalan independence. The people of Barcelona do not view themselves as Spanish. They view Real Madrid as a simple of Franco, a man who remains despised more than any other in Catalonia. Madridistas view Barcelona, and Catalans, as traitors. There are so many layers to this rivalry it would make an onion jealous.
The match itself could well prove to be one-sided, but if ever there was a game that could get Barcelona to raise their level it’s this one. They will not want to suffer defeat at home to their hated rivals. It promises to be a feisty game and while the scoreline is impossible to predict, at least one red card is probably a solid bet.
⚽ Marseille vs PSG
🇫🇷 Ligue 1
📅 Sunday 24 October 2021
⏰ 1945 UK Kick-Off
🖥️ BT Sport Live Streaming
The most intense rivalry in French football. With this one, it’s not just the teams that don’t like each other, it’s not just the fans who want to fight each. The natives of both cities outright despise each other. Marseille represents a gateway to Europe for many Africans and that is reflected in the city itself. Parisians feel like they represent true French people and many who feel their country has allowed too many immigrants blame Marseille.
Both sides have made good starts to the season, with Marseille in 3rd and PSG currently top of the pile. PSG are 10 points clear though, winning their first eight games in a row to open a sizeable gap at the top of the table. With Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe developing an understanding in recent weeks that gap could grow further but Marseille will be in no mood to be a training ground for the two superstar attackers. They have real ambitions of their own and given recent rumours of a potential takeover by the Saudi investment fund which bought Newcastle they may soon be able to match PSG financially and bring to an end the recent one sided dominance of this rivalry.
The Stade Velodrome is one of the best stadiums in Europe with a very unique atmosphere. Expect it to be rocking on Sunday night.
⚽ Atletico Madrid vs Real Sociedad
🇪🇸 La Liga
📅 Sunday 24 October 2021
⏰ 2000 UK Kick-Off
🖥️ La Liga TV
There’s no rivalry here. It doesn’t have the personal touch of Barca vs Real Madrid. This one is strictly about the football.
Atletico have started the defense of their title playing a more open brand of football, with Diego Simeone allowing his team to express themselves more than we’ve seen in past seasons. The return of Antoine Griezmann coupled with the signing of Rodrigo de Paul has perhaps given El Cholo more confidence in his teams ability to overwhelm teams in their attacking phases, as opposed to the deep block countering attacking sides he has previously used to simply wear opponents down. Their midweek defeat to Liverpool will still sting, especially the manner in which they lost and it’s probably fair to expect a strong reaction from the home team on Sunday.
Real Sociedad currently sit top of La Liga, three points clear of Real Madrid, Sevilla and Atletico. They have played a game more but as the saying goes, a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. Always better to have points on the board than the uncertainty of a game in hand. La Real have been outstanding thus far this season with Mikel Oyarzabal in the form of his life and Alexander Isak continuing to develop into one of the best all-round strikers in Europe. With a strong defence and a midfield that marries hardwork and creativity perfectly, Imanol Alguacil has built a very impressive team in his three years at San Sebastian and it’s no surprise to see him linked with moves to a number of top clubs who’s managers are on shaky ground. For now though, he seems very happy at the club he loves.
⚽ AS Roma vs Napoli
🇮🇹 Serie A
📅 Sunday 24 October 2021
⏰ 1700 UK Kick-Off
🖥️ BT Sport Live Streaming
As with Marseille vs PSG and Barcelona vs Real Madrid there’s a capital team against one from a city often viewed as an outlaw state as Napoli travel to Rome to face Jose Mourinho’s team. AS Roma are not the enemy to people of Naples though, that honour lies with Lazio.
Jose Mourinho is currently not a happy man. His side were embarrassed in the Europa League on Thursday night and his comments in his post match interview were very similar to press conferences that English fans got used to witnessing as he went two footed into his players. Things have, generally, started well for Mourinho in his return to Italy though. Roma are fourth in the table and though they are currently nine points off top spot, they are playing good football and showing good signs of early improvement under the Portuguese manager. Mourinho may not be the manager he once was, he doesn’t unify as he did at Porto, Chelsea and Inter Milan, but he’s still a good enough manager to guide this Roma team to success if given time and a win on Sunday would be the first real marker from his new club that they are a force to be reckoned with.
Napoli might just be the most in form team in Europe, at least on the domestic front. Eight wins from eight, outstanding football, an attack that’s carving teams open and the best defense in the division. With Victor Osimhen now in year two following his €70million move from Lille last season, supported by the still brilliant Lorenzo Insigne and the tireless midfield trio of Zambo Anguissa, Fabian Ruiz and Piotr Zielinski, the goals have started to flow. The Nigerian number 9 looks a completely different player to the one who struggled to adapt to Serie A last season and was branded a waste of money by some who were too quick to judge. At the other end of the pitch there has also been a resurgence in form from Kalidou Koulibaly who is once again establishing himself as the best defender in the league and his partnership with Amir Rrahmani has given this team a solid platform to build from.
⚽ Inter Milan vs Juventus
🇮🇹 Serie A
📅 Sunday 24 October 2021
⏰ 1945 UK Kick-Off
🖥️ BT Sport Live Streaming
Derby d’Italia. The Derby of Italy. Two of the three biggest clubs in the land, with their incredible history, iconic kits and legends of the past. Throughout the history of Italian football these two teams have ebbed and flowed for dominance over the national footballing landscape.
Inter’s financial problems were one of the great shames of the summer. Covid and the budget shrinking that took place in it’s aftermath cost Inter their manager, Antonio Conte, their best attacking threat, Achraf Hakimi, and their primary goalscorer, Romelu Lukaku. Inter were a team that were primed for a potential period of dominance in Serie A given the financial troubles Juventus are experiencing and the rebuilding that’s still ongoing at AC Milan. It felt like Inter were only two players away from having a near perfect 11 for Conte’s preferred style of play with the brilliant defensive trio of Skriniar, DeVrij and Bastoni in place, Hakimi on the right, Barella and Brozovic as two thirds of the midfield and the front pair of Lautaro Martinez and Lukaku. A left wingback and one more in midfield and Conte may actually have smiled. Instead, he was replaced by Simone Inzaghi, with Edin Dzeko filling the Lukaku shaped hole in attack and Denzel Dumfries the new right wingback. Inter are still very good, but they’re not the team they were last season. They’ve made a strong start to the season and currently sit third but they don’t strike you as a potential title winner.
Juventus had a very strange summer in which they brought back Max Allegri to replace Andrea Pirlo, freed themselves from the incompetence of Fabio Paratici and then tried to rectify some of his wrongdoings. They spend most of the summer trying to find a buyer for Cristiano, who they were desperate to get rid of. They failed and accept their faith. He was staying. And then in a “you can’t fire me, I quit” moment the Portuguese attacker demanded a move at the last minute and accept a significant paycut to return to Manchester United. Juventus were thrilled to be rid of him but annoyed at the timing as it did not leave them able to bring in a replacement. The season started poorly as the disjointed team from last season showed up, but Allegri is not Pirlo. Allegri is one of the best managers in the world and a master at solving problems. After two defeats and two draws in their first four league matches, they have since won four in a row and put together three straight wins in the Champions League to top their group. They aren’t the finished article by a long shot but Allegri has them looking like a real team again. Sunday will be a huge test for both sides, but it’s Juventus who need the win the most.
With these and plenty of other games taking place around Europe this weekend, there’s no shortage of football available if you decide you’d rather not watch Premier League games outside those of your own club, or indeed at all.
