Jon Gruden has resigned from his position as the Head Coach of the Oakland Raiders just over three years into the 10 year $100million contract he signed in 2018. The email scandal has brought a familiar air of controversy to the NFL and given the talking heads on US TV some content to waffle about each and every day. It’s time to put that to one side though because there are games to be anticipated, watched and talked about.  Fun Fact: ‘NFL VPN’ is one of the most searched sports phrases on Google!

Our NFL VPN articles are brought to you in partnership with EPL Index, and Dave Hendrick – host of the Two Footed Podcast, offering FREE podcasts to football fans.

The first game to focus on this weekend pits two of the best young Quarterbacks in the NFL against each other as 2019 MVP Lamar Jackson takes on the outstanding Justin Herbert as two 4-1 teams meet in Baltimore with the Chargers visiting the Ravens. Both sides have started the season really well and look like certain play-off teams. Both teams have impressed on the defensive side of the football and benefitted from exceptional play from their young QBs., which is expected for Baltimore who Pro Football Focus ranked as a Tier 1 defense in their pre-season rankings. The Ravens have been famed for their defense since moving to Baltimore, it’s what they do. The Chargers hired the outstanding Brandon Staley as their Head Coach after he acted as the defensive coordinator on the LA Rams last season and contributed heavily to them being the best defense in the league. It’s still early in the Staley-era but the early signs on the defensive side of the football have been promising.

The Ravens suffered a lot of pre-season injuries, especially to their running back group. The run is absolutely key to the Ravens offensive schemes but luckily for them Lamar Jackson is the best runner that has ever played the QB position and his ability to stretch plays, and excel in broken plays, has enabled the Ravens to keep their offense humming along. John Harbaugh, the long tenured Ravens coach, has instilled a really strong mentality into his team and that’s been seen in the fact that Baltimore are three of four in one score games this season. They’ve held their nerve under pressure and put trust in the playcalling.

The Chargers have one legit superstar on each side of the ball. Herbert on offense and Joey Bosa on defense. The Chargers hope is that these two young studs remain with the franchise for the next decade and lead the team to the type of sustained success that has escaped them during their entire history. With a promising young coach, and a good support staff on offense and defense, the future of the franchise is really bright with one glaring issue. Their home venue. They’re the B side at SoFi Stadium, being the tenants of the LA Rams. The Chargers have always been something of an afterthought in the NFL and when they moved to LA they didn’t really grab the attention of the local market like they hoped to. Like the Rams, they have Los Angeles DNA but right now they sit behind the Rams, the Lakers, the Dodgers, the Clippers, the Angels and the Kings in terms of pro sports franchises in the city. They’re also behind USC and UCLA football teams. There just isn’t the interest. If this team ever moves to a city that can love them, they could be the real deal.

The Cleveland Browns might have the most talent in the entire NFL. They are absolutely stacked on offense with two great running backs, excellent wide receivers and tight ends and arguably the best offensive line in football. They also have a recent number 1 draft pick at Quarterback in Baker Mayfield. But when you watch them play, there’s something missing. There’s a lack of a real game winner, and the most obvious place to look is the Quarterback. Mayfield is fine. Good enough to make the playoffs. But he doesn’t fill you with confidence. He doesn’t scream Superbowl winner. You don’t watch the Browns in a shootout game against a fellow contender, like last weeks match-up with the LA Chargers, and fancy Mayfield to outduel his opposite number. Take a look at all the QBs drafted in the first round from 2017 up to 2020, how many would you prefer Baker to? Mitch Trubisky is one, but his fellow 2017 draftees Patrick Mahomes and DeShaun Watson are vastly superior to Mayfield. Mayfield himself was drafted in 2018, and nobody would take him over Josh Allen or Lamar Jackson if the draft was redone. He’s better than Josh Rosen, and probably about even with Sam Darnold who’s already on his second team. From 2019, he’s better than Dwayne Haskins and probably Daniel Jones, but nobody is taking him over Kyler Murray. 2020 brought the league Joe Burrow and Justin Herbert who are both better, Jordan Love is yet to really see the field in Green Bay so it’s hard to know what he is, and early signs suggest that Tua Tagovailoa might be a bust.

So Baker is better than Trubisky, Rosen, Haskins, Tagovailoa, probably Jones and Love, and maybe Darnold. He’s clearly behind Mahomes, Watson, Allen, Jackson, Murray, Burrow and Herbert. Even if you give him the benefit of the doubt over Darnold, Love and Jones, he’s the 7th best QB of the 14 drafted in those four years. Middle of the pack. And in defense of the seven he is, or might be, better than, he was drafted into a much better situation than all bar Love who gets to sit and watch Aaron Rodgers every week. He joined a rebuilding team that was stacking itself with elite talent. And he hasn’t produced at the expected level. The Browns haven’t yet offered him a long term extension, unlike Allen who went six picks later than him. They haven’t opened talks in the same way that the Ravens have with Jackson. They seem prepared to let the season play out and see where they stand next summer. How often do the Browns front office replay the draft in their heads and take Josh Allen? Put Allen behind this offensive line, with these weapons, and the Browns might be seen as favourites to win the AFC and reach the Superbowl.

This Sunday the 5-0 Arizona Cardinals, with the magical Kyler Murray, will roll into Cleveland and look to engage the Browns in a similar type of shoot-out that Chargers engaged in. Arguably the surprise package of the season so far, the Cardinals have shown absolutely no fear this season and likely won’t be overly concerned about a 3-2 Browns team that who are 3-2 and are yet to show that the sum of the parts is better than the individual pieces. They won’t worry about Baker and the longball, because the Browns have devised a scheme to minimize the risks of having Mayfield throwing down the field. For the Browns to win they will need the tandem running backs, Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt, to establish the run early and grind down the Cardinals defensive front.
