Channel 4 revisits Barbara Taylor Bradford’s bestselling saga, while Champions League football and BBC documentaries add variety to the evening schedule.

Wednesday night television brings a mix of prestige drama, documentary storytelling and live sport. Channel 4 launches a new adaptation of A Woman of Substance, with Brenda Blethyn leading the cast in a sweeping tale of ambition, revenge and reinvention.

Elsewhere, BBC One’s Ambulance returns with another intense shift on the frontline, while BBC Two continues its investigation into the kidnapping of journalists in Syria.

For football fans, the Champions League dominates the evening with several major fixtures across TNT Sports.

A Woman of Substance

9pm, Channel 4

Barbara Taylor Bradford’s bestselling novel returns to television with a fresh adaptation starring Brenda Blethyn as Emma Harte, a formidable businesswoman reflecting on the extraordinary path that brought her from poverty to immense wealth.

The story begins in Yorkshire at the start of the twentieth century, where Emma works as a maid for a wealthy household. After a promise made to her dying mother, she resolves to escape poverty and build a life of her own making.

The drama shifts between Emma’s early struggles and her later life as one of the richest women in the world, living in a Manhattan penthouse and looking back on the betrayals, risks and relationships that shaped her rise.

Jessica Reynolds plays the younger Emma, supported by a strong cast that includes Emmett J Scanlan and Lenny Rush.

Ambulance

9pm, BBC One

The documentary series returns to the Yorkshire ambulance service for another demanding shift.

Frontline crews face a series of difficult calls through the night, including an elderly woman injured after falling onto her walking frame and a volatile patient who lashes out at paramedics.

Meanwhile inside the control room, call handler Abi faces a different problem. An abusive caller repeatedly ties up the emergency line, making it harder for genuine emergencies to get through.

Hostage

9pm, BBC Two

The second episode of this documentary series explores the kidnapping of journalists John Cantlie and James Foley in Syria.

As ransom demands are issued and negotiations stall, the reality facing the captives becomes increasingly bleak. Interviews with politicians, former hostages and even former extremists help reconstruct the events surrounding one of the most disturbing chapters of the Syrian conflict.

The Stolen Girl

9pm, ITV1

The thriller continues as the search for Lucia intensifies.

Rebecca attempts to calm the kidnapped girl at their isolated farmhouse in France, while back in Britain the investigation takes another turn when Fred hands himself in to the police. The situation becomes even more precarious when a curious neighbour begins asking questions.

Alice Roberts: Our Hospital Through Time

8pm, Channel 5

Alice Roberts continues her exploration of St Bartholomew’s Hospital in London, the oldest hospital in Britain still operating on its original site.

The episode moves from the hospital’s seventeenth century apothecary roots during the Great Plague to the modern pharmacy now run by robotic arms. Along the way Roberts examines how techniques developed during the First World War laid the groundwork for modern plastic surgery.

We Might Regret This

10pm, BBC Two

The comedy continues with Freya facing an uncomfortable meeting with a benefits assessor played by Lolly Adefope.

The discussion turns serious when Freya learns that marrying Abe could result in losing vital financial support. With doubts growing on all sides, next week’s wedding episode now looks far less certain.

Zootropolis 2

Disney+

The sequel to one of Disney’s biggest animated hits returns audiences to the bustling animal metropolis where police partners Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde attempt to unravel a new mystery.

This time the case involves a snake connected to a smuggling operation, an unusual development in a city where snakes have supposedly disappeared.

The film follows the same colourful mix of comedy and detective adventure that made the original so popular.

Live sport tonight

Champions League football dominates the evening with several major fixtures across TNT Sports.

Bayer Leverkusen v Arsenal begins at 5pm on TNT Sports 3, followed by two simultaneous kick offs at 7pm. Real Madrid face Manchester City on TNT Sports 1, while Paris Saint Germain play Chelsea on TNT Sports 2.

With places in the next round at stake, the matches could have a major impact on the shape of this season’s competition.

Watching UK TV while travelling

Streaming services such as BBC iPlayer, ITVX and Channel 4 usually restrict viewing to the UK because of programme licensing agreements.

For travellers this can mean that programmes normally available at home suddenly disappear from the catalogue.

A UK based VPN allows viewers to connect through domestic servers and access the services they already subscribe to while abroad. Some providers specialise in maintaining stable UK connections for streaming.

LibertyShield offers UK servers designed for this purpose, and readers can test compatibility through its 48- hour free trial, allowing access across devices before deciding whether to continue.
