UK TV Tonight: We Might Regret This returns with sharp laughs and sharper truths

BBC Two pairs a returning disability-led comedy with rediscovered Lowry interviews, while ITV delivers midweek suspense.

Kyla Harris’s disability-led comedy is back on BBC Two, while newly discovered audio sheds fresh light on LS Lowry’s life and work.

Wednesday night television offers something quietly distinctive. A returning comedy that refuses to soften its edges, a documentary built from forgotten tapes, and a thriller that leans into parental dread.

We Might Regret This, 10pm, BBC Two

Kyla Harris and Lee Getty’s comedy returns with the same mix of warmth and abrasion that made its debut such a welcome surprise. Freya, played by Harris, is now engaged, although the enthusiasm appears uneven at best. More pressing is the absence of her best friend and personal assistant Jo, whose presence grounded the first series.

Freya’s professional life is also drifting. Filming disability awareness adverts pays the bills but does little for her creative ambitions. Meanwhile, her agents are keen to position her as a marketable symbol, including suggesting a designer eager to create a wedding dress specifically for a wheelchair user.

The humour lands because it rarely feels neat. It is aware of the performative expectations placed on disabled public figures and explores them without sermonising. The result is comedy that feels contemporary and self aware, yet rooted in character rather than message.

LS Lowry: The Unheard Tapes, 9pm, BBC Two

Recently rediscovered 1970s audio interviews with LS Lowry form the spine of this documentary marking 50 years since his death. Ian McKellen lip-syncs the recordings, an approach that could have felt contrived but instead draws attention to Lowry’s cadence and wryness.

The film situates Lowry within the industrial landscapes he chronicled, while also examining how his work was received during his lifetime. The tapes reveal a man more complex than the popular image of the solitary painter of matchstick figures suggests. There is humour, impatience and a degree of scepticism about the art world itself.

The Stolen Girl, 9pm, ITV1

For viewers in the mood for tension, this thriller opens with a sleepover that becomes a disappearance. A house revealed to be an empty rental. Phone numbers that no longer connect. It is a familiar setup, but the execution is brisk.

The Repair Shop, 8pm, BBC One

The 16th series continues the programme’s dependable formula of restoration and reminiscence. Its appeal lies in the quiet attention paid to craft and memory.

Celebrity Lingo, 7.30pm, ITV1

A celebrity edition of the word guessing format brings competitive levity to early evening.

Watching UK TV with VPN

Programmes such as We Might Regret This on BBC Two or The Stolen Girl on ITV are tied to UK broadcast rights. Viewers travelling outside the country may find access to BBC iPlayer or ITV’s streaming platforms restricted by region.

A secure UK VPN routes internet traffic through a domestic server, allowing access to subscriptions when abroad. For those who split their time between countries, maintaining continuity can be practical rather than a technical curiosity. LibertyShield provides UK-based servers and offers a 48-hour free trial for users who wish to test performance across devices.

As television becomes increasingly platform dependent, access depends as much on digital infrastructure as on scheduling.
